In the end, despite the title, it's just a masked someone killing teenagers for reasons and those reasons are terribly dumb. But that also means it can easily enough get thrown together in a half-hearted manner for a movie that only seems to care about checking various genre boxes for the sake of Netflix's "Top Picks for You" column than delivering something fresh and fun. From the killer's themed costume to the action set pieces to the actual reason the killer is killing, There's Someone Inside Your House is a haze of slasher malaise. It's also wildly inconsistent with its gimmick, messaging, and tone, wanting to be a Scream-style meta mystery, a Heathers-style high school satire, and a dramatic redemption story all at once.

There's Someone Inside Your House is a wholly crummy affair with no teeth, no point, and no heart. It's so algorithmically thrown together that even the titular premise/promise -- of someone being in someone's house -- doesn't even hold for more than one kill. A staple of slasher and murder-mystery films is the red herring, which seemingly leads you toward the killer, but in actuality distracts you from the truth. In "There's Someone Inside Your House," one of the most prominent red herrings is Makani's secret fling and the class outsider Ollie Larsson (Théodore Pellerin), who most of Makani's friends believe is the killer. Of course, Ollie is actually not the killer; instead, it's someone who was in plain sight all along.
Admittedly, There's Someone Inside Your House is a good title for a film looking to play around with tropes and get a bit winky and clever with set pieces. But what we get is a flat, muddled mess that fails because it just wants to have everything. It wants to have someone run through a house, but also a church.
With all the superb filming facilities that it offers, Vancouver is an important hub of what is known as the Hollywood North. A significant portion of the movie was shot in John Oliver Secondary School, located at 530 East 41st Avenue. The novel is also notable for subverting certain narrative expectations throughout. That's because, as Perkins herself put it, the point of the story is not just to find out the identity of the killer but to see how Makani and her friends grapple with this terrifying threat and their own secrets.

Unfortunately, the path to her survival goes through her dark past, something that she is reluctant to face. There's Someone Inside Your House tries to make you think it's got a catchy, viable gimmick when in reality it's empty and unsatisfying. As soon as it starts to lay down tracks, and head in a certain direction, it derails and scraps the story for something drastically different or confusingly contradictory.

Park’s certainly charismatic enough to carry her scenes, and for a while it’s easy to follow Makani as she struggles to keep a low profile. But there’s not much to Makani beyond Park’s suggestive performance, least of all Makani’s threadbare and mostly implied relationship with her sleepwalking grandma (BJ Harrison), or her cute, but unremarkable thing with Ollie. Still, the most frustrating thing about “There’s Someone Inside Your House” has to be the gulf between its characters’ stated qualities and their actual behavior.

That superficiality means that There’s Someone Inside Your House has to offer something unique in the slasher department to set itself apart, and results are uneven there, too.
